Uprooted/re-Rooted is a collaboration between William Cramp Elementary School and Mural Arts Restored Spaces initiative to reimagine and revitalize under-utilized spaces within and around the Elementary school. As an embedded artist in residence, Wilson began by transforming her “studio,” a former boys’ locker room, into an indoor garden space and “field trip” destination for students to explore ecology and art in their own building. Embarking now on a larger exterior renovation of the north courtyard, a mostly female leadership team of mothers, grandmothers, teachers, and a father re-consider the underused outdoor space into a metaphorical community garden and ethno-botanical teaching space. The design of the courtyard is inspired by contemporary art history lessons, sketch-booking, and skill sharing, and the garden themes are:

EMPATHY, STRIFE, REVEAL, SPREAD and FOOD/WATER/LIFE.

The courtyard space is activated through recreation and education, contemplation and for gathering, and passage for parents and teachers. The narrow length of the courtyard is designed so that diverse activities can be going on at one time. A third-grade class can be tending the raised beds while the kindergarten class can be walking the spiral at the other end. Color is used in the courtyard to emphasize surfaces that becomes space and architectural form. Each themed garden is colored either yellow, purple or red to encourage the sensory experience of that part of the garden.
